Every Alta Reina piece is cut and sewn by our manufacturing partner in The Bronx, New York, from domestically sourced Polartec® Power Stretch™ Pro fabric. That wasn't the easy path. Our founder Suzi spent two years sourcing US fabrics and US manufacturers through the Factory 45 mentorship program, and watched factories pivot away from small designers along the way. Making Alta Reina in America was a deliberate decision — one we'd make again. Here's why it matters.
Quality We Can Actually See
When your clothing is made an ocean away, quality is something you hope for. When it's made here, quality is something you check. Our partner in The Bronx is a phone call and a visit away — we can inspect samples in hand, catch a problem in days instead of months, and have real oversight of every step in our production process.
Nobody ever outsourced anything to make it better. We keep production close because that's how gear gets better with every run.
The Only Way to Get Tall Fit Right
This is the reason no big brand can copy. Overseas factories want minimum orders in the thousands per style and size — and a size curve built for women 5'9" and up will never hit those numbers. If we manufactured offshore, tall sizing wouldn't be refined; it would be impossible.
Small domestic batches are what make Alta Reina's fit possible at all. Because our runs are small and our partner is close, we can adjust sleeve length, torso length, and rise between runs based on what tall women actually tell us. Designed by a tall woman, refined by tall women — and refined again, every single run. That feedback loop only exists because we make our gear here.
Fair Work, Real Oversight
Alta Reina is committed to ethical production. We oppose fast fashion, and we believe the people who sew your gear deserve fair treatment — not a promise on a hang tag, but working conditions we have personally seen. Manufacturing in the US means our garments are made under American labor law, by skilled sewers earning fair wages, in a facility we actually know.
A Supply Chain We Can Point To
Ask most brands where their clothing comes from and you'll get a shrug or a slogan. Ask us and you'll get an answer: Polartec® Power Stretch™ Pro fabric, sourced domestically — a mix of new and deadstock — then cut and sewn by our partner in The Bronx, New York. Short chain, real names, no mystery.
A Lighter Footprint
A shorter supply chain means our fabric and finished garments aren't crossing oceans before they reach you — that's thousands of shipping miles that never happen. By rescuing deadstock fabric that would otherwise go unused, we reduce waste without compromising performance. And because durability is integral to everything we make, our gear is built to stay out of the landfill: we'd rather you buy one base layer that lasts for years than replace a cheap one every season.
Keeping American Garment-Making Alive
Every Alta Reina purchase supports American garment workers and the cut-and-sew skills that nearly disappeared from this country. Suzi learned firsthand how fragile that ecosystem is — factories she approached were walking away from small designers entirely. Choosing to manufacture here is a vote for the workshops, mills, and makers who still do this work, so that the next small brand with a big idea has somewhere to build it.
Honest About the Cost
Making things in the US is more expensive — we're honest about that, and we don't apologize for it. The difference is in the garment: premium Polartec® fabric, reinforced flatlock seams, real pockets, and a fit dialed in for tall bodies. We'd rather charge a fair price for gear that performs for years than a low price for gear that fails you on the mountain.
